WE ARE
POET-ATHLETES

⚽ Soccer ✏️ Poetry ❤️ Community

  • SCORES U has curriculum and resources to help you lead engaging, fun, and impactful programs for your Poet-Athletes this year!

If you’re new to the team, SCORES U will help you learn about SCORES culture and complete your coach training and orientation.

  • SCORES mission is to inspire youth to lead healthy lives, be engaged students, and have the confidence and character to be agents of positive change in their communities.

We use ⚽ soccer, ✏️ poetry, and ❤️ service learning as a platform to deliver high quality youth development programs.

SCORES builds teams of Poet-Athletes who use their voice to express themselves, serve as leaders in their communities, and speak up against injustice.

  • Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) reflects the critical role of positive relationships and emotional connections in the learning process and helps students develop a range of skills they need for school and life. SCORES Coach-Mentors help Poet-Athletes build SEL skills including the ability to:

    • set and achieve positive goals

    • feel and show empathy for others

    • establish and maintain positive relationships

    • make responsible decisions

    • understand and manage emotions

High quality SEL instruction provides consistent opportunities for students to cultivate, practice, and reflect on social and emotional competencies in ways that are developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive. These opportunities provide dedicated time to focus on social and emotional competencies.

For the essential elements of effective SEL instruction, use the acronym SAFE:

    • Sequenced —Instruction is planned in a series of connected and coordinated steps so that social and emotional skills build upon each other and are strengthened over time (for example, we may need practice recognizing and managing emotions before we are ready to attempt conflict resolution).

    • Active — Instruction uses active forms of learning to help students master new skills (for example, through discussion or problem-solving scenarios).

    • Focused — Time and attention is devoted to developing personal or social skills. It is intentional rather than by spontaneous.

    • Explicit — Instruction targets a specific social and emotional skill or goal; students are made aware of what they are learning and practicing.

  • TEAMWORK — Poet-Athletes work collaboratively with others, striving together for the benefit of the whole.

LEADERSHIP — Poet-Athletes have opportunities to practice leadership skills.

COMMITMENT — We show up for our teammates and our community.
